About Compare My Area

Helping people make one of the biggest decisions of their lives — where to live — using clear, side-by-side comparisons of every UK town and city.

What we do

Compare My Area turns official UK government open data into structured, easy-to-read profiles for thousands of towns and cities. Every area page covers:

  • Average house prices by property type and multi-year price trends
  • Recorded crime rates and category breakdowns
  • School inspection outcomes from Ofsted and the devolved inspectorates
  • Broadband availability, average speeds, and superfast coverage
  • Energy efficiency ratings (EPC) for the local housing stock
  • Demographics and population data from ONS Census 2021

We also publish ranked lists — most affordable towns, safest towns, best schools — for every UK region, plus head-to-head comparisons between any two places.

Where the data comes from

Everything you see on the site is built from publicly available government datasets. We do not scrape private listings or copy editorial content from other sites.

  • HM Land Registry — Price Paid Data for sold-property statistics
  • Police UK — recorded crime data by location
  • DfE / Ofsted — school inspection ratings (England)
  • Estyn / Education Scotland / ETI — equivalent inspection data for Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland
  • Ofcom — Connected Nations broadband performance data
  • EPC Register — Energy Performance Certificates for England, Wales and Scotland
  • ONS Census 2021 — demographics and population

Who reads us

Our visitors are mostly people in the middle of a real-life decision: first-time buyers comparing affordability, families moving for schools, renters planning a relocation, and people returning to the UK from abroad. The site is intentionally focused on high-intent research moments — the questions you Google when you’re actually choosing where to live.

Our approach

We try to keep things honest, neutral and source-led. Every figure on the site links back to its data source. Where we make editorial judgements (for example, defining “safest” or “most affordable”) we explain how the metric is calculated so you can decide whether it matches what you care about.
